Penny Loafers in Print

Two weeks ago I received an email from a reader letting me know that a UK magazine called The Chap had used one of my images. I had never heard of the magazine, but the readers described it as a, “tongue in cheek “journal for the modern gentleman.” ” You can never be too sure, so I quickly looked it up to see if it was about menswear or some other fetish. It is the former.  Penny Loafers in Print This post really isn’t about The Chap magazine image, but what the incident led me to think about. I thought about my blog in general. I was humbled that a reader recognized a relatively old image of mine in a magazine and then took the time to tell me about it  (Thanks again, Stephen!). At times it is hard to know if people are enjoying the blog, but interactions with readers like this are a much appreciated reminder that many do.

Last, but not least I thought about the fact that they chose an image of the Bass Logan Weejun for their article. I haven’t actually read it, but it looks like a short-history-plus-how-and-where-to-buy article. In my opinion, this is just another piece of evidence to confirm that the Logan Weejun has the classic penny loafer shape.

On that note, Bass doesn’t currently offer the Logan in brown on their site (only black & burgundy), but you can pick a pair up at Zappos, but with contrast stitching (see here).

The Chap is, as you say, a humorous magazine aimed at ‘Young Fogeys’, a group who not only like to dress in old fashioned English clothing but also adopt the mannerisms and habits of a bygone age. Pipe smoking, raising your hat to ladies and using expressions like ‘by jove old chap’ would be the hallmarks of a Young Fogey, all very silly and great fun. I’m surprised that Bass Weejuns are of interest in The Chap, I’ll have to get hold of a copy and see what it’s all about!

It’s kind of flattering, they used your picture. But on the other hand, they did it without your permission, which is not ok IMHO. I thought, they were more polite, as I do know the magazine quite well.

You’ll find the Logan in brown right here:

Woof – Thanks for info! That makes sense. While I may not be all that young I certainly have fogey-ish qualities!

Mike – Thanks for the loafer link. I would have appreciated credit as well, but…

Can you provide a brief review of your Logans? I’ve not read good things about contemporary Bass shoes. Many people say they have a plastic-like feel and are not as good as the older made-in-the-USA product.

    Two words: copyright infringement.

American copyrights can more or less be enforced in the UK. You may want to consult an attorney if this is a for profit magazine. They are illegally profiting from your intellectual property.

Thanks for all of the support fellas (and legal advice!), I appreciate it.

Gamma – The first thing I will say about current Weejuns is that I knew what I was getting when I bought them which is a shoe that has a great design and that fit me better than any other pair of loafers that I have tried on. I was not expecting to that they would compare to Alden LHS or any of the AE loafers. However, I don’t think that the brown leather ones feel like plastic, but I will admit that the burgundy pairs do and I still like them.

Last thing, if there is one thing that I have learned in my life it is that nothing is good as it used to be (according to everyone about anything).

It’s disappointing that they have used your intellectual property for financial gain. Have you legal counsel? We have a few lawyers in the askandy family that may be able to offer advice.

OCBD: I appreciate your humble take on traditional mens style, and I consult your site frequently. You embody not only old fashioned good taste in dress, but in personal comportment as well. Please keep up the prose!

American readers may be interested in the play-on-words in the article’s title, “Penny for the Chap”.
It alludes to “Penny for the Guy”, a British phrase similar to the USA’s “Trick or Treat” used when kids in the UK needed money for the Guy Fawkes dummy that they were making for the parade and bonfire.
