Going Green Part 3: Dreaming Green

As I alluded to in Going Green Part 1 and my Dream Draft Wardrobe post I have a thing for olive corduroy jackets. I am not sure exactly what it is about them that calls to me, but they do. It could be the subtle yet distinctive color of olive or the softness of corduroy combined with the slouch of a soft-shouldered sack. Whatever the case may be it is an item that is high on my want list.
Olive Corduroy Sport CoatA few weeks back I spotted a fantastic example of an olive corduroy sport coat (see above). It was being auctioned on Ebay so I put this post on ice as I did not want to put extra eyes on it. The last thing I wanted to do was to have some poor trad’s heart broken when he was sniped at the last second, because of my post. Luckily for him it was not my size.

I saved this image primarily for myself. I will use it to remind me to stay focused on acquiring the pieces that I truly want instead of buying items that are close, but are on sale and available. I may also have to use it as a reference when I eventually break down and have something like this made, but mine will have patch pockets. For now I will just dream.

Not quite the same but JC Penney has a green corduroy jacket on sale for $50. Could be a good place holder until the real thing comes along.

I spent a couple years buying things off ebay that either didn’t quite fit or weren’t exactly what I wanted. Now I only pull the trigger if I know it’ll fit and it’s exactly what I’m looking for. Mostly, though, I save up until I can buy it new OTR or MTM from Press or O’Connell’s. I’d rather have a small stock of what I want than a collection of things that are close, but I never feel great wearing them. A+ advice as always.

I also like this jacket. The green is nice and I have worn this shade in a variety of clothing items many times. However, I am fascinated by the camel and also brown versions of this same style jacket. Think Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate. The Camel colored jacket and black knit neck tie. I believe I have seen the jacket MHJ is referring to. I kind of like it and was trying to work with it, but the one I saw had a really thin whale.

Nice jacket, Jerrod. I have what may be its twin, purchased at Brooks sometime in the 90s when they still made 3/2 sacks. It is a perfect fall and winter item, great over a sweater or your namesake OCBD, with ties or without. It works with patterns (e.g., a Tattersall shirt) and solids, wools and cottons. A great all ’round choice. As you say, it is as soft as camelhair but looks a bit more rugged and so far has worn quite well.

I have a Ralph Lauren Univeristy Club green corduroy jacket in a slightly bluer shade of green than the one here, which is good for me (olive doesn’t flatter me). I thrifted it, and amazingly, it needed no alterations.

As good ol’ Charlottesville noted, it is a flexible jacket for fall & winter. I wear it with Oxford cloth shirts, tattersall shirts, and striped shirts, mainly in blue but sometimes yellow. Plaid wool ties seem perfect, but knit ties, club ties with hunting themes, and textured stripes all work, too. Chinos and suede chukkas are great with it, but for work, I wear dark brown wool pants and chocolate brown suede brogues.

Mine needs elbow patches to keep it going, but I’m having problems finding just the right shade of brown to suit the jacket and the braided leather buttons.

I also have a corduroy jacket in taupe/camel/dark stone/whatever you want to call it. Close in shade to my hair, I tend to wear it in the spring and on cooler summer days, though it also sees some service in autumn.

    Now for a corduroy suit….

How funny: I’ve been watching this very same jacket! It’s a beauty. But I can’t pull the trigger: the sack cut just looks huge on me. But I can’t stop thinking it might just be perfect ….
As you say, ebay is too tempting, and we buy stuff that’s close, but not quite, and it always feels that way. Discernment is key. I admire your resolve.

I would like to hear from you
