My Barbour Beaufort

OCBD Blog Barbour Beaufort

Finding a versatile piece of Fall outerwear can be tricky. A few years back I was looking for a jacket that I could wear in the Fall with my Shetlands sweaters as well as my sport coats. Something like my duffle coat, but not quite as warm. The answer turned out to be Barbour.

Barbour with BlazeBarbour is well known and liked in Trad circles. These waxed cotton jackets conjure up images of country side hunting in a rugged Land Rover, but in reality they are more often used for cool rainy trips to the office. The fact that they perform well in either scenario gives them a lot of credibility. Combine this with their sporty English vibe and every trad’s inner anglophile longs for one.
Barbour & OCBDThere are lots of Barbour models out there. I have limited experience with the Brand. My Barbour jacket is a Beaufort (Thanks, Hardline 42!) It is a great model for me, it is long enough to pair with a sport coat, but not so long that it makes me look like a boy wearing his father’s coat. I would provide fit advice, but my jacket is from 1988 so I doubt that it is very relevant. Hi Jerrod, Nice looking Beaufort with lots of desireable patina added, it gives you a distinguished look. I have bought a Bedale this autumn and it’s beginning to look like time to put it to use. However, I am far from the cool rugged patina that your coat has. I tried the Bedale together with a sport jacket and it exactly covered the hem of it, I don’t like when the wax jacket does not cover the hem of the sport jacket/blazer. Keep up the good and stylish spirit.

Hi Jerrod! I’m of the opinion that a good wax jacket should have plenty of room to layer both sweaters and sports jacket underneath. The Beaufort does that perfectly. I’m also wondering, do you regularly coat your jacket with new wax?

Keep up the good work, cheers!

Joel – I agree! I have not yet applied wax to jacket. I think that I will give it a go this winter when it gets too cold for the Barbour.

    Lennart – Thanks!

I have a Barbour Bedale and love it. It is shorter than the Beaufort, which I prefer. It is a great jacket for the fall and even winter months. It has become my “go-to” jacket. I have a Barbour liner which zips in nicely and keeps me warm during colder weather. There is still room for a sweater, if needed.

I bought it at a local Orvis store and got an excellent fit. Also, Orvis will send it back to Barbour for re-waxing for about $35.00. They recommend every two years, though I’m on year four and it’s still in good shape. The Orvis person said it will come back looking like a new jacket, even if the waxing has faded out.

I wear a northumbria and its my goto jacket during the cold 6 months in sweden, it can fit some damn thick sweaters and the extra length is great since im 6’5, the 8oz fabric also helps during the northern winter. The removable game pockets is another great feature for the rest of you dads out there, dirty napkins, stones, branches and cones my son wants to bring home just get thrown in there without a second thought.

I would like to hear from you
