Fall Looks for all Temps

It’s 42 degrees outside as I type this. On Monday it was 80 degrees and I was wearing shorts. Today I am contemplating donning a toboggan. Fall can be like that.

The images below show how I managed to stay warm or cool as the temps fluctuated. Some things like the red shirtjac and the green vest you will continue to see but the shorts, polos, and madras will soon be put away for the season.  Winter is coming.

Tell us more about the red shirt over the button down? I really like the look. Did you size up on a wool double flap shirt or is it made to be worn as a jacket?

  2. oxford cloth button down says:

Robert – Thanks! It is a heavier shirt and is meant to be worn as a jacket. This one is from jcrew. I went with my normal size.

Despite being female, I have had a long standing love of ivy/trad/prep clothing for as long as I can remember – although it wasn’t until the past decade or so (and reading Ivy-Style.com) that I realised it was a specific way of dressing or indeed living. Shetland jumpers, Barbour apparel, L. L. Bean clothing and accessories, etc. Whatever I could pick up in the UK or via import from the USA (which is somewhat limited in comparison to what you can purchase in the US). For loafing about the house I have my US college sweatshirts…! For me it is far more than a fashion statement or style, it is an expression of who I am and how I perceive myself. It is not an understatement to say that it is part of my soul.

The Autumn is the time for the light weight wool jumpers and cords to come out – always paired with a suitable OCBD! Temperatures are falling in the UK and the nights are drawing in…..

Thank you so much for this blog – it is such a joy to read about the trad/ivy/prep world not just clothes, but its people and your excellent choices of literature.

nice post. a very refreshing blog. and like you, happy that fall seems to be here.

    1. how does that shirt compare to, say, LL Bean’s heavy flannel/chamois fabric?

    2. my current down vest is super-light but a clearance rack ugly light green. have been wearing the zip in vest liner of a barbour jacket to dress up: https://www.barbour.com/uk/barbour-polarquilt-waistcoat-zip-in-liner

    3. excited about my latest replacement of a frayed oxford cloth shirt – blue with skinny white stripes: https://propercloth.com/design-a-shirt/?shirtID=894153#

    Andrew – Thanks!

    1. The JCrew shirt is heavier, thicker, and stiffer than the Bean shirts that you mention.
    2. I need one of these liners.
    3. Very nice!

Dianec – Thanks so much for taking the time to leave your comment and for the kind words!

I have Bedale that’s about 6 years old and just starting to get broken in. I got the liner about 4 years ago during a particularly clod winter thinking I would use it primarily as a liner. Well, I use it primarily as a vest. It mostly works well but it does not zip up to the chin and does not have a stand up collar, which are features i like in a regular vest. Still, when the weather turns, I wear it all the time and have got my money’s worth.

In the last pic, what sunglasses are you wearing? I love that image: a bright, sunny autumn day but cool enough to sport a Shaggy Dog sweater and enjoy a good book outside.

Great post. Tell me more about the black watch jacket?

I would like to hear from you
