This week I thought I’d throw it back to old school days of trad online. I am talking about the peak of the online menswear community. I am taking it back to the forums (shoutout to Ask Andy Trad!), the blogs (big ups to HeavyTweedJacket!), all the tumblrs, and the early days of IG with this post. With that being said here is some good ole’ collar, cuff, and unadulterated sweater porn. Enjoy!
Let’s Take it Back to the Old School

Nice one Jerrod! I’ve definitely been inspired by your OCBD and crew neck sweater combinations over the years. It’s one of those Ivy/Trad staples that can be re-work so many different ways. I enjoy simple looks like this, there’s an art to doing them well. They can be elementary with navy or grey sweaters with solid white or blue shirts, or slightly more complex with striped and checked shirts with different colored sweaters.
Definitely a low key style flex.
How do you feel about the look with a small arched wool knit tie added into the mix? The look is sometimes done in PRL Look-books.
Thanks Jerrod, more posts like this in the future would be greatly welcomed!
Thanks Tie Clip! I agree that it’s simple and fulfilling at the same time. I am not against the wool knit tie here, but I think that a silk tie adds a nice pop of color and material contrast. I might have to give the wool knit tie under the shetland look a try.
Everything in this post is perfect! I really like the Harley of Scotland and vintage BB sweaters.
A very enjoyable jaunt through some of your admirable knitwear selection! I have not quite so many colour Shetlands available, but still a good range and this was a good reminder to me to wear them all, rather than always reaching for the grey or navy crew neck. Regards Andy
Woof, great to hear from you! Don’t worry you are not alone. I reach for the same ones over and over. Grey is definitely one of them.
Diggin’ the Timex and the cable knit.
Impressive collection and variety. It appears that everything except the tennis sweater is a crewneck. Is this a stylistic choice or is this not your entire collection?
Thanks! This definitely isn’t everything but 95% are crewnecks which is definitely my preference.
6th photo (5th individual sweater photo) from the top – is that Harley’s Ugie Pearl? Looks great!
It is, thanks!
Great pics. Love the watch straps!!!!
The bowling watch is so so cool!
Those in NYC know the perennial problem of layering: if you dress for the cold outside, you will be sweating inside with the radiator heat; if you dress for walking, you will be freezing if you have to stand in line outside. It’s a struggle…removable layers are really the only way to go…but that makes Shetland over ocbd typically too hot/too much of a hassle.
Would love to see some fits that are just Shetland sweaters. Need some inspiration there…have taken to wearing a rolled up bandana around the neck, which feels bare. But need some other ideas!!
Hey Thomas! I love that watch so thank you. I always thought that the Shetland over the OCBD with down vest was the best of layering. I did do a post on wearing a Shetland over a long sleeve t-short (https://oxfordclothbuttondown.com/2023/11/shetland-a-long-sleeve-t-shirt/), but you’re still going to have to pull that sweater over your head to de-layer. Good idea with the bandana tho!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane, the photos are, as usual, sublime. Oh how I wish I had known what a golden era I was living in during the WordPress/early IG/pre-commercialized everything late 2000s & early 2010s. Thanks for keeping at least one site going that hearkens back to the glory days.

I have the same gray sweater except I have a hole in the left elbow. I’m allowed to wear it around the house but my wife frowns upon it if I go off the property.
Ha! That’s great. I have several with the same issue. I use them to hike in. I need to get them redarned.
Great overview of a great collection!!!
I have been trying to track down a forest green sweater for a couple of years.
Where is your forest green shetland from?
Thank you! Unfortunately it’s from Ralph Lauren’s defunct Rugby line. A good forest green seems harder to come by than you’d think.
Thank you for confirming; the search for the great white whale must continue!
